Background

The City of Sugar Land maintains a network of ground storage tanks (GSTs) that play a critical role in delivering a safe, reliable, and resilient water distribution system for residents and businesses. These tanks provide essential water storage capacity, maintain system pressure, and support fire protection throughout the community. To ensure the continued reliability of this infrastructure, the City implements a proactive rehabilitation program that evaluates the condition of existing tanks and prioritizes improvements based on age, condition, and operational needs. Ground storage tanks typically require major rehabilitation every 15 to 20 years to preserve their structural integrity, prevent corrosion, and extend their service life. Rehabilitation efforts may include structural repairs, blasting and removal of deteriorated coatings, application of new protective coatings, and other modifications necessary to maintain compliance with industry standards. By investing in routine maintenance and rehabilitation through the Capital Improvement Program, the City protects critical water infrastructure, reduces the risk of service interruptions, extends the lifespan of valuable assets, and supports Sugar Land's strategic goal of maintaining sustainable and resilient infrastructure for the community
