Digital Overhead Radiography System

The City of Norfolk (the “City”) is seeking a responsible vendor to provide a Veterinary Overhead Tube Crane Digital X-ray System according to the terms, conditions, and specifications of this solicitation.

The Virginia Zoo is a premier zoological institution committed to exceptional veterinary care, wildlife conservation, and medical excellence. The zoo houses a diverse collection of species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, large carnivores, primates, hoofstock, and megafauna—each presenting unique diagnostic imaging needs.

The Zoo’s veterinary hospital does not currently have a built‑in radiography system. Staff rely on a portable X‑ray unit that requires frequent lifting, positioning, and transport of heavy equipment. This setup poses ergonomic challenges and increases physical strain during procedures, particularly when imaging large or unpredictable animals. Additionally, the portable system lacks the kVp (penetration power) necessary for large‑bodied species and often produces lower‑quality images, limiting diagnostic capability and complicating case management.

These limitations hinder workflow efficiency, reduce diagnostic accuracy, and restrict the hospital’s ability to perform high‑quality imaging across all patient sizes. To address these challenges and elevate medical care standards, the Virginia Zoo is issuing this RFQ to procure a modern overhead tube crane (OTC) digital radiography system that provides improved image quality, greater kVp for large animals, safer tube mobility, and reliable performance in a demanding zoological environment.
