The Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance (OTA) Chemical Safety & Climate Change Resiliency program provides tools and resources to businesses, manufacturing facilities, and local municipal departments that use or store hazardous chemicals, and helps businesses and communities identify and prepare for chemical safety hazards associated with climate change. The tools and resources are offered to help businesses, manufacturers, local emergency management and public health officials, and communities prepare for severe weather events, comply with emergency planning and notification requirements, and incorporate toxics use reduction into their emergency plans to avoid potential chemical releases or industrial accidents. As recently featured in a WBUR article and podcast series on The Common, the increase in frequency and severity of extreme weather events due to climate change raises concerns about the safe management and control of chemicals and potential exposures of residents, vulnerable populations, workers, and first responders to toxic or hazardous chemicals.
