The Abandoned Mine Land program division of the RRC is tasked with the reclamation
of abandoned surface mines which usually consists of the following: earthwork
(highwall reduction and spoil recontouring) burial or treatment of unsuitable spoil
(usually acidic or naturally occurring radioactive spoil) and installation of erosion and
water control structures and revegetation. Dangerous abandoned underground mine
openings are usually closed by one of the following methods: backfilling, capping
(concrete or metal grating) or metal gating. The reclamation activities must be
professionally engineered and environmentally developed.
The RRC does not have the personnel or the equipment required to perform
Professional Environmental Engineering Services. RRC relies on contracting with
highly qualified, experienced Professional Environmental Engineering Service
companies licensed in the State of Texas to provide and perform all work necessary to
complete Professional Environmental Engineering projects required under the Contract
and Work Orders issued thereunder.
