Overview of Mapp3D's Laser Scanning of Old Indianapolis City Hall
Mapp3D conducted a full building laser scanning initiative to support the renovation and redevelopment of Old Indianapolis City Hall. The 100,000 square foot historic structure was digitally captured using a
coordinated workflow of tripod based and handheld Leica scanners, producing a dense, highly accurate point cloud used to generate detailed Revit models and CAD drawings.

Exterior facades, the main lobb-y and stair systems, and all interior floors were scanned and linked through predetermined connection points to ensure accuracy within a quarter inch. Despite challenges such as
limited lighting and the processing of more than 200 GB of scan data, the team completed field work in a single day and delivered a reliable, comprehensive digital model within two weeks.
The resulting documentation provided architects with the precision necessary to integrate modern redevelopment into the historic building envelope. Compared to traditional hand measurement-often
requiring weeks of fieldwork and multiple site revisits-the laser scanning approach significantly reduced time, cost, and potential errors, offering a robust foundation for planning, design, and construction
