Description

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) initiative will issue a new solicitation in Fall 2024. The fall solicitation will include both the High-Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) and the High-Performance Computing for Materials (HPC4Mtls) programs, which are supported by DOE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO), Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO), and the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM). These programs harness the raw processing power of national laboratory supercomputers to help decarbonize U.S. industry and move us closer to an equitable clean energy future that benefits all Americans. HPC4EI is the umbrella program for the HPC4Mfg and the HPC4Mtls programs. The HPC4EI programs are designed to improve manufacturing processes, address product lifecycle energy consumption, increase the efficiency of energy conversion, improve the performance of energy storage technologies, and improve the performance of materials in complex environments by providing access to national lab supercomputing resources and expertise for high performance computing projects. The solicitation will target qualified industry partners to participate in short-term, collaborative projects with DOE national laboratories.

Eligibility for the program is limited to entities that manufacture products or conduct operations in the United States for commercial applications, as well as to organizations that support these entities. The solicitation will encourage applicants to partner with a diverse range of universities, community colleges, and non-profit organizations, especially those located in disadvantaged communities. This focus ensures the equitable use and benefits of HPC national laboratory resources and technologies.

Selected projects will be awarded up to $400,000 to support computing cycles and work performed by DOE national laboratories, universities, and non-profit partners. All DOE national laboratories are eligible to participate. The industry partner must provide a participant contribution of at least 20% of the total project funding with either in-kind or cash contributions.

AMMTO (https://www.energy.gov/eere/ammto/advanced-materials-manufacturing-technologies-office), under DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE, https://www.energy.gov/eere/office-energy-efficiency-renewable-energy), is the primary sponsor of the HPC4Mfg program. AMMTO partners with private and public stakeholders to increase the global competitiveness of the U.S. manufacturing sector and to accelerate the adoption of innovative materials and manufacturing technologies in support of a clean, decarbonized economy.

IEDO (https://www.energy.gov/eere/iedo/industrial-efficiency-decarbonization-office), also under EERE, sponsors the HPC4Mfg program. IEDO accelerates the innovation and adoption of cost-effective technologies that eliminate industrial greenhouse gas emissions.

FECM (https://www.energy.gov/fecm/office-fossil-energy-and-carbon-management) is the primary sponsor of the HPC4Mtls program. In the coming solicitation, the Point Source Carbon Capture program (https://www.energy.gov/fecm/point-source-carbon-capture) will be participating. FECM minimizes environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuels and industrial processes while working to achieve net-zero emissions across the U.S. economy.

A portion of this anticipated funding is part of DOE’s Technologies for Industrial Emissions Reduction Development (TIEReD) Program, which leverages resources across DOE’s applied research offices to invest in fundamental science, research, development, initial pilot-scale demonstration projects, and technical assistance and workforce development. Rooted in the principles identified in the 2022 Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap (https://www.energy.gov/industrial-technologies/doe-industrial-decarbonization-roadmap), DOE is building an innovation pipeline to accelerate the development and adoption of industrial decarbonization technologies.

Detailed topics of interest to the participating offices will be included in the upcoming solicitation. Learn more about the HPC4EI initiative (https://hpc4energyinnovation.llnl.gov/).
