The Consolidated Coal Company No. 7 mine operated in Staunton, Illinois from 1881 to 1952. Acid mine drainage from this mine has infiltrated the wells of homes along Herman Road and old Route 66. Recommendations from the IDPH suggest that the main water line be extended to these residents. The groundwater in this area poses a potential health risk to infants and those with restricted sodium intake. Furthermore, only one of the homes sampled meets the Illinois Class I Potable Groundwater Quality Standards. The City of Staunton has been replacing and installing water lines over ten years. Staunton has been in the process of replacing the water mains for many years now and has replaced around 85 percent of the old cast iron water mains and have eliminated over 99 percent of lead service lines in town. As Staunton continues with this process of installing the water infrastructure it is in the best interest of IDNR to coordinate and utilize the City of Staunton's engineers and contractors.
