1. A local team consisting of mammalogists, ornithologists, entomologists, and molecular biologists is needed to perform multiple tasks to complete this study. A field survey is needed first to determine the areas of interest close to Marine CTC 5, including the terrain, farm, forest, and types of animals. After the field survey is completed and the Institutional Animal Use Committee approval is obtained, ectoparasites collection needs to be conducted by doing, but not limited to, tick drags and direct collection from animals (i.e., small mammals, birds, bats, companion animals, and livestock). Traps are required for small mammal, bird, and bat collections. The hosts and ectoparasites require species identification and nucleic acid extraction, followed by multiple PCRs to assess the pathogens they carry. Lastly, the Indonesian team needs to transfer these data and provide material samples (i.e., lysed samples, extracted nucleic acid, and PCR products) to NMRC.
