Section I: Introduction and Project Summary
The City of Independence is requesting a proposal from a licensed and insured landscaping company to
perform a replacement planting of thirty-seven existing trees in the downtown business district of
Independence, KS.
The downtown street scape features 4’ x 4’ tree wells set into the concrete sidewalk, covered with metal
grates. Existing trees have exceeded the size limits for space and are due for replacement. The existing
trees will be removed by city staff.
The locations of the tree wells to be replaced are as follows.
100 block of East Main Street
100 block of West Main Street
100 block of South Pennsylvania Avenue
100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue.
Section II: Scope of Work
Phase I: Estimate for purchase and installation of replacement trees.
City staff will remove the existing trees from the wells in-house. Proposals should include cost estimates
for the following scope of work.
• Preparation of tree wells for planting
o Cleaning out of old soil, trash, or debris from tree wells.
o Installation of vertical drain hole in the bottom of each tree well, if one is not already
present. Vertical drains should be approximately 6” in diameter and 4’ – 5’deep. The
vertical drain hole should be filled with clean, course gravel. If vertical drain holes are
already present, existing gravel should be dug out and replaced.
o Soil removed from the tree wells should be thoroughly mixed with finished compost at a
ratio of approximately 50/50, then added back to the tree wells.
• Purchase and planting of new trees
