As part of the Town of Stony Plain Art in Public Places Program, the Town is pleased to announce this competition for the design and installation of a three-dimensional artwork piece or series (the “Work”) that will be permanently installed outside of the new Community Recreation Facility (the “Facility”).
Individual artists and artist teams with prior experience with large-scale permanent public art installations are eligible to apply. This Call for Artists consists of two-stages. The Town intends to shortlist up to four (4) qualified artists from Stage I to continue to Stage II of this opportunity.
The Art in Public Places Program is funded by a percent for art policy which is designed to enhance the visibility of public artworks throughout the community. The total commission available for the final Work is $325,000 CAD (all inclusive, excluding GST) and must cover all costs associated with the design, fabrication, transportation, and on-site installation requirements of the Work.
While there are no specific subject matter or media requirements, the Work shall be a new creation and must adhere to the following design parameters:
• Originality: The Work shall be an original creation of the Artist and shall not duplicate any other public art installations by the Artist.
• Appropriateness: The Work shall be suitable for family and community viewing, remain neutral and welcoming to all audiences, and be appropriate for the Location and intended use of the space.
• Public Benefit: The Work shall provide tangible benefit to the public (e.g., seating, shade, or other functional use).
• Environmental Integration: The Work shall consider and reflect the environmental character and sustainability principles of the building, whether through form, materials, or conceptual approach.
• Access & Safety: The Work shall not impede safe access to or use of the Facility, shall not pose a risk of injury to the public (e.g., not designed as a climbable structure), and shall not interfere with the operation or maintenance of the area (e.g., foundation designed to allow grass cutting around).
• Fabrication & Installation: The Artist shall be responsible for all fabrication and installation requirements, including but not limited to engineering, foundation design and construction, utility locates, delivery, and installation.
• Compliance: The Work shall comply with all applicable Alberta Building Codes, fire codes, and the Geotechnical Analysis requirements.
• Form & Placement: The Work shall be designed to be viewed in 360 degrees and fit within the prescribed installation space outlined in Annex C.
• Durability & Security: The Work shall be fabricated from durable materials suitable for public use and weather conditions and be resistant to vandalism.
• Timeline: Installation of the Work shall be completed no later than October 31, 2026, subject to Town availability and the Facility construction schedule.
