Henry Vilas Zoo – Multi-Building Mechanical Systems Improvements Project

Dane County is seeking proposals from qualified firms to provide Engineering services for the Henry Vilas Zoo – Multi-Building Mechanical Systems Improvements Project , located at 702 S. Randall Avenue Madison, WI 53715. The requested services includes the evaluation and design of mechanical system upgrades across multiple zoo facilities including HVAC replacements, building automation system (BAS) upgrades and integration, and a new chiller system with associated photovoltaic (PV) infrastructure. Services will be performed under a professional services agreement.

The purpose of this engagement is to address aging systems, operational deficiencies, and support animal welfare requirements long term. Consultants will be expected to coordinate closely with daily zoo operations and general operations staff on-site, and must comply with all applicable county specifications, ordinances, and local permitting requirements.

Interested proposers should have demonstrated experience in public sector mechanical engineering design and complex building systems, and show capacity to manage projects of similar scope and complexity. A pre-proposal site meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 5, 2026 at 1:00 pm at Henry Vilas Zoo Main Entrance 702 S. Randall Avenue Madison, WI 53715 , and all questions must be submitted by Tuesday, February 10, 2026 . Proposals are due by Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at 2:00 pm .

Henry Vilas Zoo is an active public facility with multiple buildings serving animal habitats, aquatic systems, and visitor spaces. Several existing mechanical systems are aging, have limited controls integration, or no longer meet current operational needs, including temperature-sensitive animal environments. The project consists of multiple building-specific scopes with varying levels of complexity, some of which may be bid and constructed separately at the County’s discretion.

Design work will be completed while facilities remain operational. Consultants should anticipate coordination with County staff and zoo operations, account for access and sequencing constraints.
