Title: California Avenue District Signs
Addenda: 0
Release Date: 3/10/2026
Due Date: 4/7/2026
California Avenue is one of Palo Alto’s most recognizable commercial corridors, serving as a hub for shopping, dining, community gathering, and more activities. Over time, the area has evolved into a pedestrian-oriented destination with strong local identity, yet there is currently no prominent gateway signage that clearly announces arrival to California Avenue or reinforces its character.
The proposed California Avenue gateway signage is the first step in a City-initiated effort to establish a wayfinding sign program that is visually distinctive and are identify markers for the district. The signage is intended to improve wayfinding, strengthen neighborhood branding, and enhance the public realm along the highly visible corridor. There are two proposed signs of the same design style and material palette, including the primary “blade-style” gateway sign, which serves as the visual anchor of the system. A second, smaller complimentary sign will be installed to identify the California Avenue business district from Oregon Expressway.
The proposed signage balances visibility and architectural quality while respecting the surrounding streetscape and applicable sign code constraints. Its form, color palette, and material selection are intended to complement California Avenue’s existing character and match a future wayfinding sign program.
