The Department of General Services (DGS), Executive Office Division (EO), Office of Sustainability (OS) is the State's sustainability lead for implementing California's sustainability goals as expressed in Executive Orders and legislation. OS currently directs and coordinates all state agencies and departments to implement California's sustainability goals; standardizes monitoring and reporting for state agencies including waste and recycling and material reuse; designs sustainability programs for state agencies, develops state agencies' sustainability policy, guidance, and regulations as appropriate, and promotes initiatives to achieve greater gains in sustainable practices, including rewards and recognition programs; tracks state agencies' results and accountability for success in meeting specific targets via the sustainability roadmap; and establishes critical baselines and guides state agencies' progress in achieving California's sustainability goals.

OS is procuring waste and recycling consulting services to conduct a pilot program to establish bin contamination rates in a typical state agency office building, determine potential cost savings to the state from reducing bin contamination, and to determine effective employee education programs that increase recycling efforts and reduce overall waste. The results of the consultation will be used by OS to help other state agencies improve their waste and recycling efforts.
