Summary

The City of Jackson is inviting qualified and experienced stone conservationists to submit proposals for Stone Conservationist services required for restoration and preservation of the Historical Civil War Monument, In Defense of the Flag, a bronze and granite statue dedicated to the City of Jackson in 1904. . Qualified Contractors must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in evaluation, stone consolidation, preservation of original materials, material analysis, cleaning, repairs, protective coverings and documentation of existing conditions and final treatment report. All work must abide by the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works' Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice and the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Preservation. Fellow or Professional Affiliate of the American Institute of Conservators of Historic and Artistic Works, preferred/helpful for prequalification.



Background

The monument was dedicated to the City of Jackson in 1904 by General William H. Withington, a Jackson-born Union General and Civil War veteran. The monument reflects the city's role as a major contributor to the Union cause, as Jackson County sent over 3,200 men to serve in the Army and Navy during the war.
