Implementation of Phase 1 Nature Trail Rebuilds at the Wanuskewin Heritage Park
Synopsis:
Due to unexpected and unusually intense precipitation events, multiple sections of Wanuskewin’s Nature Trail Network have experienced significant erosion, featuring rills, braiding, potential tripping hazards and loose, uneven surfaces, resulting in difficult/infeasible access to mobility impaired individuals and damage to surrounding sensitive habitats. In 2025, ISL Engineering was tasked with developing a phased trail rebuild project, focusing on the documentation of current damages and problematic areas, and development of erosion-mitigation strategies. Wanuskewin is now seeking to enter into the implementation of the first phase of repairs/rebuilds, focusing on the “Path of the People” loop, a roughly 883-meter trail segment. Wanuskewin is seeking proposals from interested bidders to;
1) Organize and host frequent meetings with key members of Wanuskewin Staff to discuss project progress, deliver updates to project schedules, discuss project constraints, and develop construction documents.
2) Implement recommended trail rebuilds, including the use of sloped trail surfaces, elevation adjustments, and water-diversion strategies such as rolling grade dips or water bars.
3) Ensure all work is completed to Wanuskewin’s satisfaction, with particular focus on adhering to regulatory restrictions/guidelines and Wanuskewin’s internal protections regarding heritage/cultural resources.
