Overview

Summary

Pinellas County is undertaking the replacement of an existing force main along 54th Avenue North, extending from the west side of St. Joes Creek to 74th Street North, then tying-in to the existing 36” force main at the South Cross Bayou Water Reclamation Facility. The project involves replacing approximately 1137 linear feet (LF) of an existing 24-inch prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) force main due to compromised conditions downstream of the project site. The existing downstream force main has ruptured twice, resulting in sewage spills. Due to those past pipe failures, the force main within 54th Avenue North is being replaced as a preventative measure.

Background

The proposed replacement pipe consists of approximately 1165 LF of 24-inch PVC pipe (C-900), which will be a combination of standard PVC pipe, fusible PVC pipe, and restrained joint pipe. The new force main connects to the existing 24-inch PVC force main located on 54th Avenue North, approximately 175 feet west of St. Joes Creek. The force main then extends west along 54th Avenue North then north along to 74th 27 Street North, where it connects to an existing 36-inch PVC force main approximately 720 feet north of 54th 29 Avenue North. Installation of the proposed force main will involve a combination of open-cut trenching and horizontal directional drilling. Additionally, a series of air valves will be installed along the proposed force main to ensure efficient operation. This project also includes the restoration of impacted areas within the project limits, restoring the conditions in these areas to their state prior to construction. Restoration includes, but is not limited to, landscaping of impacted areas, as well as road milling and paving.
