Twenty (20) mine features (2 portals, 18 shafts/stopes) will be safeguarded in this project. There are an additional six (6) previously closed features that need maintenance repair work due to vandalism or decay over the years. The features include open shafts, adits, and stopes that are on public lands or privately owned land that are widely used by hikers, campers, 4WD enthusiasts, and hunters. Closure methods will include 18 machine backfills, 1 grate, 2 grated corrugated steel pipes, and repairs (concrete patches, grouting monuments, bat cupolas, and backfilling).
The work areas are located in areas near Kenosha Pass, Tarryall, and Guffey. Many of the sites are difficult to access, requiring negotiating either difficult 4WD roads, or overland through steep, wooded terrain. The China Wall area near Tarryall, for example, is maintained by ColoradoFourWheelers.org as part of their off-road trail system. See Attachment 1 for Location and Access Route information.
