The objective of this work is to safely complete aerial surveys of moose and white-tailed deer within WMU 504, 506 and 509 (Appendix B - Figure 1). This work involves low-level maneuvering, at low air speeds, to count and classify animals in farmland and forested landscapes to estimate density, and age and sex composition. These population inventory surveys will be conducted by means of transects. Survey design will be based on Distance Sampling methods.
For each survey, we anticipate the use of up to two separate aircraft (Appendix B - Table 1), operating concurrently to deliver the survey over a short timeframe. Proponents are encouraged to provide wet and dry rates for multiple WMUs, as per the Fixed Hourly Rate table in Appendix C, Attachment 3.
Suitable weather conditions are a limiting factor for these surveys (e.g. adequate snow cover, appropriate temperature, visibility, precipitation, and wind conditions). To ensure safe and effective delivery of surveys, we expect the successful Proponent(s) to communicate regularly throughout the survey season to identify suitable opportunities to achieve project objectives.
