Facilities Planning and Design (FPD) is pursuing a comprehensive update to our existing wayfinding strategies and exterior signage design standards. Since the previous wayfinding and signage update in 2003 the campus has undergone significant growth and development. Beyond an expanded physical layout, these changes have led to a dramatic increase in the number of individuals visiting the campus to access a variety of resources, programs, and/or events. In addition, a recent graphic identity update for the University has created a misalignment between new visual standards and existing exterior signage and
wayfinding. Whether by car or on foot, our existing physical, digital, and passive wayfinding infrastructure no longer adequately informs and supports these users to confidently and successfully navigate the campus built environment. The aim of this effort
is to design a comprehensive and informative campus wayfinding system that is clear, consistent, and reflective of the values and character of UNC-Chapel Hill.
