Description

The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) HB-2A POWDER instrument is undergoing an improvement project to upgrade the detector with the Modular Interdigitated Detector Array System (MIDAS). This new detector upgrade will allow for continual coverage of the powder diffraction neutron scattering volume without rotation of the detector, as the current instrument operates. This will provide a significant increase in instrument experiment throughput by decreasing scan times by roughly 30x. Part of the new detector array will require a fine radial collimator to filter the sample scattered neutrons and provide adequate detector resolution for proper data acquisition. The new radial collimator will require an oscillation system (±2 degrees) to effectively reduce background noise and unnecessary scattering from the sample environment. The collimator will be mounted above the oscillation system and the assembly will be located inside the instrument shielding between the sample center and the detector array. Specification - HB2A-EQ-20-0001 outlines the technical specifications for the fabrication and procurement of the MIDAS radial collimator and RFP-PR368222 outlines technical and price proposal requirements.
