FOOD WASTE COLLECTION AT RW&RC

Greenville County operates a Food Waste Composting Facility located at 11075 Augusta Road. To broaden our impact and increase accessibility, we are expanding food waste composting options to our Residential Waste and Recycling Centers (RW&RC). This project will establish a collection system at each participating RW&RC, featuring food waste recycling containers that are convenient and accessible for residents, situated alongside our current recycling containers.

Initially, this program will roll out at three RW&RC locations, with plans to extend the service to all six centers over time. Our RW&RCs are staffed and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

In June, Greenville County launched its Food Waste Composting Facility, designed to divert food waste from landfills and repurpose it into compost. To date, our feedstock has primarily come from industrial sources and grocery stores. However, incorporating residential food waste has been challenging due to the facility’s location—over 25 miles from the county’s population center.

To bridge this gap, we plan to establish convenient food waste collection points at Residential Waste and Recycling Centers (RW&RC) across the county. By providing accessible locations and reliable collection services, we aim to capture this valuable, untapped residential feedstock and significantly increase community participation in food waste recycling.
