Overview

Summary

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) features specialized Career and Technical Education (CTE) welding and industrial training at John F Kennedy High School. The infrastructure will feature a modern lab dedicated to welding and fabrication.

This project involves the renovation of two existing art classrooms and two existing office spaces to create a state-of-the-art welding laboratory that will provide high school students with hands-on, industry-aligned training in a modern career and technical education environment.

Background

JFKHS was constructed in 2020. The new welding lab will be the second in the district.

The Welding Fabrication concentration within the Metallurgy pathway prepares students for highdemand careers in metalworking, manufacturing, and construction. Through courses such as Gas Metal
Arc Welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, and Flux Cored Arc Welding,
this hands-on CTE program teaches the essential skills of welding and fabrication, combining technical
precision with craftsmanship to create and repair metal structures and components.
METALLURGY PATHWAY
• Gas Metal Arc Welding: Students will use the Gas Metal Arc Welding process (GMAW) to safely join
various types of metal.
• Shielded Metal Arc Welding: Focuses on stick welding techniques, teaching students how to join and
repair metals using electric current and electrodes.
• Gas Tungsten Arc Welding: Covers TIG welding, a precise method used for high-quality welds on
metals like aluminum and stainless steel.
• Flux Cored Arc Welding: Students will be able to use the Flux Cored Arc Welding process (FCAW) to
safely join various types of metal.
