Description

Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (hereinafter called “LLNS”) is seeking sources for the Scope of Work below in support of LLNS’ requirements.

Scope of Work: Modernization of Laser Bay Transporters (LBTs)

Project Overview:

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNS is seeking qualified companies to perform a comprehensive modernization of three (3) Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), known as Laser Bay Transporters (LBTs). These vehicles are critical for the autonomous transport and precise positioning of optics packages (Line Replaceable Units, or LRUs) within the NIF laser bays. The LBTs have provided reliable service for over 20 years, and this project aims to renew their systems to ensure continued safe, dependable, and compliant operation for at least another two decades.

Objective

Modernize the LBTs’ electronic, control, and safety systems to current industry standards while maintaining all existing operational capabilities and interfaces. The modernization should focus on enhancing reliability, maintainability, and compliance with current safety and IT requirements, ensuring long-term supportability and performance.

Scope of Work

The selected contractor will be responsible for:

  • Assessment and Planning:

Evaluate the current condition of the LBTs and develop a comprehensive modernization plan that addresses obsolescence, reliability, and compliance with applicable standards.

  • System Modernization:

Replace or renew outdated electronic, control, and safety systems with modern, supported technologies. Ensure all existing LBT functions and interfaces are preserved. Original electronics were provided by AGV Products.

  • Integration and Validation:

Integrate new systems with existing mechanical and operational infrastructure. Thoroughly test and validate all functions to ensure seamless operation and compliance with NIF requirements.

  • Documentation and Support:

Provide updated technical documentation, user manuals, and training materials. Offer recommendations for ongoing maintenance and support to ensure reliable operation for 20+ years.

Contractor Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in AGV or industrial automation modernization.

  • Expertise in controls engineering, safety systems, and long-term support planning.

  • Familiarity with compliance requirements for safety and IT standards.

  • Proven track record of delivering robust, long-lasting modernization projects.

Submission Requirements

Interested companies should submit:

  • Company profile and relevant experience.

  • Ability to participate in future Webex meeting hosted by LLNS to learn more about the project.

Interested contractors should submit responses to the above via e-mail to Adam Potts, Contract Analyst, potts14@llnl.gov.
