Project Description: As the first step to addressing the finished water reach of the SLA, Metro Water is currently engaged in the construction of the Salt Lake Aqueduct Replacement (SLAR) Reach 1 – a 72”, 66”, and 60” diameter welded steel pipeline from the Little Cottonwood Water Treatment Plant (LCWTP) to Fort Union Boulevard (approximately 7000 South). Despite its name, the SLAR is not intended to outright replace the SLA, but to provide resiliency, reliability, and redundancy for Metro Water and its member cities. The SLAR Reach 1 is also connected to Salt Lake City’s Big Cottonwood Water Treatment Plant through the 36” diameter Cottonwoods Connector Reach 1.
Metro Water is also engaged in an effort to address the seismic resiliency of the SLA. This project – called the Salt Lake Aqueduct Hardening – considers a combination of replacement and sliplining the SLA. The SLA Hardening project will affect the hydraulic capacity of the SLA.
To better plan for the timing, finances, and staffing of these and other projects, Metro Water desires to study the SLAR Reaches 2 and 3.
