As Alberta considers options to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions, one solution is the ability of natural areas such as forests, wetlands, grasslands, and croplands to act as carbon sinks, absorbing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Natural processes such as the soil carbon cycle, and plant growth cycles sequester carbon in the form of natural carbon “sinks.” Understanding and estimating the carbon sink capacity of vegetation and soils could help the province find more effective ways to mitigate the rise in the atmospheric CO2 concentration and global warming.
