REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
Department of Parks and Recreation
Cricket Batting Cage Construction & Installation
Deadline for Submission: September 30, 2026, by 3:00 pm
PURPOSE
The Charter Township of Meridian, through its Parks and Recreation Department, is requesting proposals from
qualified contractors for the furnishing and installation of a double side-by-side cricket batting cage facility at
Towner Road Park.
The project will consist of two adjacent cricket training lanes constructed side-by-side, each approximately 72
feet long by 12 feet wide by 12 feet high, resulting in an overall enclosed cage area of approximately 72 feet by
24 feet. A 70-foot by 14-foot by 14-foot lane configuration reflects a commercially common cricket-net size
and provides additional overhead clearance for cricket practice. Each lane shall include a dedicated bowler run-
up extending beyond the rear end of the enclosed cage as specified in this RFP. The project will include a
concrete foundation over a properly compacted, non-frost-susceptible aggregate subbase, a cricket-specific
synthetic playing mat or pitch system, structural steel framing, and permanent heavy-duty cricket-specific
enclosure systems.
The Township is seeking a complete, turnkey, permanent, heavy-duty, cricket-specific outdoor facility designed
for high-frequency use and year-round environmental conditions in Michigan. The facility shall be designed
specifically for cricket training and shall accommodate cricket batting, bowling, wicket practice, and repeated
impact from cricket balls, including hard cricket balls used in adult competitive play.
PROJECT SCOPE
The successful contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, equipment, supervision, transportation, installation, and
related services necessary to complete the project.
The anticipated project components include, but are not limited to:
Site Preparation
The contractor shall:
* Verify existing site conditions prior to construction
* Layout and stake the proposed batting cage location
* Prepare the site for installation
* Dispose of materials as necessary to accommodate the installation
* Complete excavation and grading necessary for the concrete foundation and finished surface
* Excavate unsuitable existing material as necessary and provide a properly compacted, non-frost-
susceptible aggregate subbase beneath the concrete foundation
* Address drainage and positive surface drainage to prevent standing water within the enclosed cricket
lanes, dedicated bowler run-up areas, or immediately adjacent to the foundation
* Protect existing park facilities, trees, landscaping, utilities, pathways, and other improvements
* Restore any areas disturbed by construction upon completion
The contractor shall verify all existing utility locations prior to excavation.
CONCRETE FOUNDATION PAD
Provide and install a complete concrete foundation system suitable for permanent outdoor installation in the
Lansing, Michigan climate, constructed over a properly compacted, non-frost-susceptible aggregate subbase.
The concrete pad shall:
1 of 8
* Accommodate two side-by-side enclosed cricket lanes, each approximately 72 feet long by 12 feet wide
by 12 feet high, for an overall enclosed cage area of approximately 72 feet by 24 feet, plus the required
bowler run-up areas
* Be designed and constructed to support the structural framing and expected use of the facility
* Include engineered concrete thickness, concrete strength, non-frost-susceptible aggregate subbase,
control joints, finishing, and subgrade preparation necessary for the intended application and climate
* Be constructed in accordance with applicable building codes and industry standards
* Provide a smooth, level, and properly sloped surface suitable for installation of artificial turf
* Include appropriate drainage considerations
* Be installed over a properly prepared subgrade and properly compacted, non-frost-susceptible aggregate
subbase
The contractor shall identify the proposed excavation depth, aggregate type and depth, concrete thickness,
concrete strength, and subgrade preparation in the proposal. The complete foundation system shall be designed
to minimize frost heaving, differential settlement, cracking, and movement caused by Michigan freeze/thaw
cycles.
Base enclosed-cage dimensions: Approximately 72 feet long by 24 feet wide, consisting of two approximately
70-foot by 12-foot lanes, with an approximately 12-foot clear height, plus dedicated bowler run-up areas.
Contractors may recommend minor dimensional adjustments necessary to accommodate the proposed cage
system, provided each enclosed lane remains approximately 72 feet long by 12 feet wide by 12 feet high and the
overall enclosed facility remains approximately 72 feet by 24 feet. Any adjustment shall preserve the cricket-
training functionality, required clearances, and bowler run-up requirements and is subject to Township
approval.
ARTIFICIAL TURF
Provide and install a commercial-grade outdoor athletic playing surface incorporating a cricket-specific
synthetic playing mat or pitch system suitable for batting, bowling, wicket practice, and repeated use with hard
cricket balls.
The artificial turf shall:
* Cover the full playing area of both enclosed lanes and provide a smooth continuation through each
required bowler run-up area
* Be designed for outdoor use and prolonged exposure to weather
* Be UV resistant
* Be suitable for high-frequency recreational use
* Be installed over an appropriately prepared surface
* Include all necessary adhesive, seams, edging, infill, shock pad or underlayment, if recommended, and
related installation materials
* Provide a durable and relatively low-maintenance playing surface
* Be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications
The contractor shall identify the proposed turf manufacturer, product, pile height, backing, infill system, warranty,
and anticipated useful life.
The proposed system shall include a cricket-specific synthetic mat or pitch product. The proposal shall identify
the playing characteristics, installation method, seam and edge treatment, compatibility with hard cricket balls
and cricket footwear, maintenance requirements, warranty, and anticipated useful life.
CRICKET BATTING CAGE STRUCTURE
Provide and install a complete structural framing system fabricated from structural steel suitable for permanent
outdoor use for two side-by-side cricket training lanes.
Each enclosed cricket lane shall be approximately 72 feet long by 12 feet wide by 12 feet high.
2 of 8
The structure shall include:
* Structural vertical posts
* Overhead framing
* Appropriate cross-bracing and structural supports
* Anchoring system
* All necessary hardware and connection components
* Hot-dip galvanizing or an equivalent corrosion-resistant system specifically approved by the Township
for long-term outdoor exposure on all exposed structural steel
* Structural components designed to withstand normal wind and weather conditions
The two enclosed lanes shall be constructed immediately adjacent in a side-by-side configuration, resulting in
an overall enclosed cage area of approximately 72 feet by 24 feet. Each lane shall include a dedicated bowler
run-up extending a minimum of 10 feet beyond the rear end of the enclosed cage, with approximately 10 to 15
feet preferred where site conditions permit. The transition between the enclosed cricket lane and the run-up
shall be smooth, level, and free of trip hazards. An alternative configuration may be considered only with prior
written Township approval.
The contractor shall provide structural specifications, including:
Powder coating may be provided in addition to hot-dip galvanizing but shall not be considered a substitute for
corrosion protection unless specifically approved by the Township.
* Post dimensions
* Structural material
* Steel gauge/thickness, where applicable
* Hot-dip galvanizing and any supplemental finish or coating
* Anchoring method
* Wind-load rating
* Manufacturer
* Warranty
NETTING / CAGE ENCLOSURE

complete overhead, side, end, and divider netting supported by a galvanized structural steel system. The
enclosure and steel support system shall be comparable in permanence and outdoor durability to the steel
systems used for the pickleball courts at Towner Road Park, while the impact enclosure material shall remain
suitable and safe for repeated cricket-ball impact.
Netting shall:
* Extend the full approximately 72-foot length of each enclosed lane
* Extend the full approximately 12-foot width and approximately 12-foot height of each enclosed lane
* Provide overhead coverage
* Provide side coverage
* Be appropriately secured to the structural framing
* Be suitable for outdoor athletic applications
* Be UV resistant and weather resistant
