Description

The Strathcona Regional District is requesting submission of Proposals from qualified vendors to
undertake a slope stability and mitigation options analysis of slope approximately 3 hectares in size
adjacent to the Zeballos Forrest Service Road (Appendix A).

The assessment area is located within the CWHvm1 Biogeoclimatic zone on the west coast of
Vancouver Island. This zone has a wet, humid climate with cool summers and mild winters and high
seasonal precipitation. The assessed area is dominated by western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla)
with some amounts of amabalis fir, western red cedar, sitka spruce, and Douglas fir.

Stemming from a wildfire in 2018, there is a slope instability which originates on Crown Land
increasing the likelihood that rocks, mud, soil and/or trees could fall on the Province of BC
owned/operated road hindering access into Zeballos. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has
a right-of-way along this entire road. There are frequent deadfalls and rocks hitting just above the
paved stretch coming into Zeballos. The area of concern is outside of Zeballos municipal jurisdiction.

$50,000 in funding has been provided through the Union of BC Municipalities to undertake this project.
