Lincoln Park Mural Community Art Project

Introduction
Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department (“ZPRD”) invites amateur and professional artists to submit proposals to create an original work of public art for an important community project tied to the rededication of Lincoln Park and the Town’s commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary.
The selected design will become a community mural: the artist’s artwork will be divided into 6” x 6” tiles that community members will be invited to paint during the Lincoln Park Rededication event later this fall, before the assembled mural is permanently installed within Zionsville Town Hall.

Organizational Background
Platted in 1852, the Town of Zionsville is located in Boone County, Indiana, approximately 20 miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis. Lincoln Park sits at the heart of Zionsville’s historic district and holds a distinct place in the Town’s history: the site once served as a railroad depot where Abraham Lincoln spoke to the community on his way to his 1861 inauguration. Over the decades, the site has transformed from a rail depot into a vibrant downtown park that today hosts concerts, weddings, community events, and everyday gatherings.
This project is being conducted as an open-entry art commission, timed to coincide with the rededication of Lincoln Park and the Town’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Project Description
The Lincoln Park mural is a community project highlighting the history of Lincoln Park and its transformation through the years. Just as the park itself was developed through community support, the mural will utilize community participation: the artist’s design will be broken down into 6” x 6” tiles that individuals are invited to paint during the Lincoln Park Rededication later this fall. The completed artwork will showcase the transformation and importance of Lincoln Park over the years, from a train depot where Lincoln once spoke on his way to his inauguration, to the vibrant downtown park it is today.
