Moosomin Dam Relief Well Engineering
Synopsis:

Moosomin Dam is located 12 kilometres south of the Town of Moosomin, SK on Pipestone Creek. The dam was constructed in 1954 by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) and the reservoir is currently used primarily for recreational purposes, including various cottage developments on the lakeshore west of the Dam.

To manage the phreatic surface through the main embankment dam, a series of 17 relief wells were drilled in the toe of the dam shortly after original construction. The relief well materials of construction vary as this site was used for testing purposes, including the use of helcore, transite, no-corrode, and plywood piping. This piping is end of life.

The scope of the work is to provide engineering services to:

  • Design, drill, and test a new relief well network including the design of new wellheads
  • Design earthworks (ditching, weirs, etc.) to collect and measure relief well flows prior to their discharge into the existing Spillway or Low-Level Outlet channels
  • Complete grubbing, brushing, and other vegetation management and earthworks (ditching, grading, drains, berms) to manage overland flows in the area bounded by the embankment dam toe, spillway channel, and Low-Level Outlet channel
  • Decommission the existing relief well network
