The Aquifer Storage and Recovery Expansion Project is located at the SAWS H2Oaks Center, an approximately 3,200-acre facility composed of the SAWS Brackish Groundwater Desalination plant, Local Carrizo water production wells, Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) wells, and ASR treatment plant. The facility’s ASR process enables the storage and recovery of approximately 233,000 acre-feet of potable water in a confined aquifer reservoir. Before being distributed into the SAWS water distribution system, water from the Local Carrizo wells is combined with water from the ASR wells and treated at the ASR treatment plant to be chemically compatible with Edwards Aquifer water. This project is intended to expand the current 30MGD treatment capacity of the ASR treatment plant by adding 30 MGD of additional treatment capacity for a total treatment capacity of 60 MGD. This project will also include upgrades to Instrumentation and Controls, SCADA, programming, and communications at the ASR wells as needed.
When Will Work Occur?
Design is anticipated to start in 2025
Construction is anticipated to start in 2028 and may be split into multiple phases to address all scope items while managing expenditures
What to Expect:
Increasing capacity of the existing treatment processes from 30MGD to 60MGD.
Addition of new treatment process equipment and/or implementation of new types of treatment process equipment.
A rapid condition assessment of the existing facility infrastructure.
Investigation of permitting requirements for a surface water treatment facility.
Coordination with plant staff to ensure continuous plant operation during construction.
