Site Description
1675 Flat River Road in Coventry Rhode Island is a large building that
doubles as the Town Hall, Town Offices, and the home for Coventry Public
Schools of Rhode Island. The Northern portion of the site is undergoing
construction; a new parking lot and stormwater drainage system are being
installed. The Southern and Western sides of the site are serviced by a
stormwater drainage system made up of primarily catch basins. The
Eastern side of the site has downspouts that drain directly into the woods
with no treatment or erosion control elements.
Proposed Concept
The proposed concept for this location includes:
* Excavating and installing new rain gardens in the courtyard and
north of the employee parking area.
* Removing existing PVC piping from downspouts to the woods. Existing condition downspout and outlet
* Installing new HDPE piping to convey roof runoff to new rain
gardens from existing downspouts.
* Removing hardscape (pavement) and installing trees with filter
boxes.
* Planting trees in the large grass area across from the main entrance.
* Optional bioretention basin with sediment forebay adjacent to
former drop-off lane .
Re-piping the existing roof leaders to new rain gardens will increase
stormwater treatment, infiltration, and peak runoff attenuation. It will also
reduce erosion to the woods. Removing hardscape and planting trees will
reduce runoff, increase infiltration, and shade, and enhance the aesthetics
of the site overall.
