The Clark County Desert Conservation Program (DCP), in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Desert Tortoise Recovery Office, will implement desert tortoise monitoring using mark-recapture survey/sampling on eight demography plots within recovery units encompassing 1,976 acres within Clark County, Nevada. Direct monitoring and estimation of tortoise vital rates from demographic study areas is a component of the recovery objectives outlined in the Revised Recovery Plan for the Mojave Population of the Desert Tortoise
(Gopherus agassizii) (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2011). The Mark-Recapture Surveys on Demography Plots project will conduct renewed desert tortoise surveys at eight plots, which will directly contribute to recovery actions by monitoring desert tortoise population growth. These data are necessary for effectively monitoring recovery progress and delisting of the desert tortoise, and this project will aid in determining sustainability of desert tortoise populations over time and help determine how the recovery process is progressing.
