Moosomin Dam Relief Wells Drilling
Synopsis:

Moosomin Dam is located 12 kilometres south of the Town of Moosomin, SK on Pipestone Creek. The dam was constructed in 1954 by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA). The reservoir is currently used primarily for recreational purposes, including various cottage developments on the lakeshore west of the Dam.

To manage the phreatic surface through the main embankment dam, a series of 17 relief wells were drilled in the toe of the dam shortly after original construction. The relief well materials of construction vary as this site was used for testing purposes, including the use of helcore, transite, no-corrode, and plywood piping. This piping is end of life.

WSA intends to install new, modern stainless steel relief wells to better manage the phreatic surface through the main embankment dam & foundation of the Moosomin Dam. This project includes:

  • Installation of five (5) stainless steel pressure relief wells, complete with:
    • Steel surface casing
    • Temporary well head
    • Stainless steel well screens
    • Sand, grout and other ancillary materials
  • Installation of three (3) stainless steel monitoring wells. The construction of the monitoring wells is typical of the pressure relief wells.
  • Well development, testing and well commissioning.
  • Decommissioning the existing pressure relief wells by drilling to remove existing casing and filter pack before sealing with grout.
Additional Information:

WSA is a Treasury Board Crown corporation within the meaning of The Crown Corporations Act, 1993 (Saskatchewan) that is governed by The Water Security Agency Act (Saskatchewan). WSA is responsible for water management in the Province of Saskatchewan, which includes managing the Province’s water supply, protecting water quality, ensuring safe drinking water and the treatment of wastewater, reducing flood and drought damage, protecting aquatic habitat, and managing dams and related supply channels.
