Qualifications:

RESTORATION PROJECTS AND EMPLOYING PERSONNEL SKILLED IN THE RESTORATION PROCESSES AND OPERATIONS INDICATED.
2. FIELD SUPERVISION: REQUIRE RESTORATION SPECIALIST FIRM TO MAINTAIN AN EXPERIENCED FULL-TIME SUPERVISOR ON THE
JOB SITE DURING TIMES THAT CLAY MASONRY RESTORATION AND CLEANING ARE IN PROGRESS.
B. FIELD-CONSTRUCTION MOCKUPS: PRIOR TO STARTING MASONRY RESTORATION, PREPARE THE FOLLOWING SAMPLE TEST AREAS ON

3.03 PREPARATION
A. PROTECT PERSONS, MOTOR VEHICLES, SURROUNDING SURFACES OF BUILDING WHOSE MASONRY SURFACES ARE RESTORED,

B. UNUSED ANCHOR REMOVAL

3.04 BRICK REMOVAL AND REBUILDING
A. REMOVE BRICK AND REBUILD AREAS INDICATED ON THE DRAWINGS.
B. CAREFULLY REMOVE BY HAND ANY UNITS WHICH ARE DAMAGED, SPALLED, SHIFTED OR DAMAGED. CUT OUT FULL UNITS FROM JOINT
TO JOINT AND IN MANNER TO PERMIT REPLACEMENT WITH FULL SIZE UNITS WITHOUT DAMAGING SURROUNDING MASONRY.
C. FACE BRICK: REMOVE DAMAGED FACE BRICK AND REPLACE WITH NEW FACE BRICK TO MATCH.
D. MAINTAIN FLASHING, REINFORCEMENT, LINTELS AND ADJOINING CONSTRUCTION IN UNDAMAGED CONDITION.
E. SUPPORT AND PROTECT UNITS TO REMAIN WHICH SURROUNDS REMOVAL AREA.
1. REMOVE LOOSE PARTICLES, SOIL, DEBRIS, OIL AND OTHER CONTAMINANTS FROM EXISTING UNITS BY CLEANING WITH STIFF

FILL HEAD JOINTS AND SHOVE INTO PLACE. WET CLAY BRICKS THAT HAVE ASTM C 67 INITIAL RATES OF ABSORPTION (SUCTION) OF
MORE THAN 30 GRAMS PER 30 SQ. IN. PER MINUTE. USE WETTING METHODS THAT ENSURE UNITS ARE NEARLY SATURATED BUT
SURFACE DRY WHEN LAID. MAINTAIN JOINT WIDTH FOR REPLACEMENT UNITS TO MATCH EXITING UNITS.
H. TOOL EXPOSED MORTAR JOINTS IN REPAIRED AREAS TO MATCH JOINTS OF SURROUNDING EXISTING BRICKWORK.
3.05 BRICK CONSOLIDATION TREATMENT
A. APPLY TREATMENT ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS. APPLY TREATMENT AFTER REMOVAL OF EXISTING MORTAR BUT
PRIOR TO REPOINTING.

3.06 REPOINTING MASONRY
A. REPLACEMENT OF DETERIORATED MORTAR JOINTS, CRACKED MORTAR JOINTS, MISSING MORTAR JOINTS, AND JOINTS NOT BONDED
TO FACE BRICK, ADJACENT STONE.
B. JOINT RAKING: RAKE OUT MORTAR FROM JOINTS TO DEPTHS EQUAL TO 2-1/2 TIMES THEIR WIDTHS BUT NOT LESS THAN 1/2 INCH
(12MM) NOR LESS THAN THAT REQUIRED TO EXPOSE SOUND, UN-WEATHERED MORTAR.
1. REMOVE MORTAR FROM MASONRY SURFACES WITHIN RAKED-OUT JOINTS TO PROVIDE REVEALS WITH SQUARE BACKS AND EDGES
AND TO EXPOSE MASONRY FOR CONTACT WITH POINTING MORTAR. BRUSH, VACUUM, OR FINISH JOINTS TO REMOVE DIRT AND
LOOSE DEBRIS.
2. DO NOT SPALL EDGES OF MASONRY UNITS OR WIDEN JOINTS. REPLACE ANY MASONRY UNITS WHICH BECOME DAMAGED.
3. CUT OUT OLD MORTAR BY HAND WITH CHISEL AND MALLET, UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED.
4. POWER-OPERATED ROTARY HAND SAWS AND GRINDERS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED UNLESS IT CAN BE DEMONSTRATED TO
ARCHITECT TO WORK SUCCESSFULLY WITHOUT DAMAGING CLAY MASONRY ON HORIZONTAL JOINTS ONLY. POWER-OPERATED
GRINDERS ON VERTICAL JOINTS ARE PROHIBITED.
C. JOINT POINTING: RINSE MASONRY JOINT SURFACES WITH WATER TO REMOVE ANY DUST AND MORTAR PARTICLES. TIME
APPLICATION OF RINSING SO THAT, AT TIME OF POINTING, EXCESS WATER HAS EVAPORATED OR RUN OFF AND JOINT SURFACES ARE
DAMP BUT FREE OF STANDING WATER.
1. APPLY FIRST LAYER OF POINTING MORTAR TO AREAS WHERE EXISTING MORTAR WAS REMOVED TO DEPTHS GREATER THAN
SURROUNDING AREAS. APPLY IN LAYERS NOT GREATER THAN 3/8 INCH (9.5MM) UNTIL A UNIFORM DEPTH IS FORMED. COMPACT
EACH LAYER THOROUGHLY AND ALLOW TO BECOME THUMBPRINT-HARD BEFORE APPLYING NEXT LAYER.
2. TAKE CARE NOT TO SPREAD MORTAR OVER EDGES ONTO EXPOSED MASONRY SURFACES, OR TO FEATHEREDGE MORTAR.
3. WHEN MORTAR IS THUMBPRINT-HARD, TOOL JOINTS TO MATCH APPROVED SAMPLE. REMOVE EXCESS MORTAR FROM EDGE OF
JOINT BY BRUSHING.
4. CURE MORTAR BY MAINTAINING IN A DAMP CONDITION FOR NOT LESS THAN 72 HOURS.
5. WHERE REPOINTING WORK PRECEDES CLEANING OF EXISTING MASONRY, ALLOW MORTAR TO HARDEN NOT LESS THAN 30 DAYS
BEFORE BEGINNING CLEANING WORK.
6. CURE HYDRAULIC LIME MORTAR ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER’S REQUIREMENTS. NEW LIME POINTING MORTAR WILL NEED TO
BE DAMPENED REGULARLY WITH THE FOLLOWING CURING METHODS:
E. ACCEPTABLE CURING METHODS INCLUDE COVERING WITH WET BURLAP AND POLYETHYLENE SHEETED PANELS, PERIODIC HAND
MISTING, AND PERIODIC MIST SPRAYING USING SYSTEM OF PIPES, MIST HEADS, AND TIMERS.
F. ADJUST CURING METHODS TO ENSURE THAT POINTING MORTAR IS DAMP THROUGHOUT ITS DEPTH WITHOUT ERODING SURFACE
MORTAR.
7. FOR HYDRAULIC LIMES, RETENTION OF MOISTURE WITHIN THE MORTAR FOR THE FIRST SEVERAL DAYS [MINIMUM OF 96 HOURS] IS
CRITICAL TO ENSURE THAT THE HYDRAULIC SET TAKES PLACE BECAUSE ITS HYDRAULIC CONSTITUENTS REACT WITH WATER
ITSELF. THEREAFTER, THE REMAINING CARBONATION SET REQUIRES CYCLICAL LIGHT DAMPING AND SLOW DRYING. FOLLOW
MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING THE TREATMENT OF THE MORTAR JOINTS THROUGHOUT THE DURATION OF THE
CURING PROCESS.
8. HAIRLINE CRACKING WITHIN MORTAR OR MORTAR SEPARATION AT EDGE OF A JOINT IS UNACCEPTABLE. COMPLETELY REMOVE
SUCH MORTAR AND REPOINT.

1.07 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. MASONRY CLEANING SPECIALIST QUALIFICATIONS: ENGAGE AN EXPERIENCED MASONRY CLEANING FIRM TO PERFORM WORK OF THIS
SECTION. FIRM SHALL HAVE COMPLETED WORK SIMILAR IN MATERIAL, DESIGN, AND EXTENT TO THAT INDICATED FOR THIS PROJECT
WITH A RECORD OF SUCCESSFUL IN-SERVICE PERFORMANCE.
B. TREATMENT WORKER QUALIFICATIONS: WHEN MASONRY IS BEING CLEANED OR PAINT BEING REMOVED, ASSIGN AT LEAST ONE
WORKER PER CREW WHO IS TRAINED AND CERTIFIED BY MANUFACTURER OF CLEANING PRODUCTS TO APPLY ITS PRODUCTS.
WORKMEN SHALL HAVE AT LEAST FIVE (5) YEARS’ EXPERIENCE WITH THE PRODUCT BEING USED OR AN EQUAL PRODUCT.
C. INSTALLED CLEANING TEST PANELS: PROVIDE ONE SAMPLE AREA OF EACH CLEANING METHOD TO BE USED IN A LIMITED VISIBILITY
LOCATION WHERE DIRECTED BY THE ARCHITECT. REQUIRED MASONRY CLEANING SHALL MATCH INSTALLED CLEANING TEST PANELS
ON THE BUILDING. DO NOT DISTURB EXISTING CLEANING TEST PANELS UNTIL COMPLETION OF MASONRY CLEANING OPERATIONS.
CLEANING TEST PANELS SHALL SERVE AS A QUALITY STANDARD FOR ALL MASONRY CLEANING. THE INTENT OF THE CLEANING
PROGRAM IS TO CLEAN THE MASONRY EFFECTIVELY WITHOUT DAMAGING THE MASONRY, USING THE LEAST AGGRESSIVE CLEANING
METHOD.
D. QUALITY-CONTROL PROGRAM: PREPARE A WRITTEN QUALITY-CONTROL PROGRAM FOR THIS PROJECT TO SYSTEMATICALLY
DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY OF PERSONNEL TO PROPERLY FOLLOW METHODS AND USE MATERIALS AND TOOLS WITHOUT DAMAGING
MASONRY. INCLUDE PROVISIONS FOR SUPERVISING PERFORMANCE AND PREVENTING DAMAGE.
E. CLEANING PROGRAM: PREPARE A WRITTEN CLEANING PROGRAM THAT DESCRIBES CLEANING PROCESS IN DETAIL, INCLUDING
MATERIALS, METHODS, SEQUENCE, AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED; PROTECTION OF SURROUNDING MATERIALS; AND CONTROL OF
RUNOFF DURING OPERATIONS.
1. IF MATERIALS AND METHODS OTHER THAN THOSE INDICATED ARE PROPOSED FOR ANY PHASE OF CLEANING WORK, ADD TO THE
QUALITY-CONTROL PROGRAM A WRITTEN DESCRIPTION OF SUCH MATERIALS AND METHODS, INCLUDING EVIDENCE OF
SUCCESSFUL USE ON COMPARABLE PROJECTS, AND DEMONSTRATIONS TO SHOW THEIR EFFECTIVENESS FOR THIS PROJECT.
F. CLEANING APPEARANCE STANDARD: CLEANED SURFACES ARE TO HAVE A UNIFORM APPEARANCE AS VIEWED FROM 15 FEET (4.6 M)
AWAY BY ARCHITECT. PERFORM ADDITIONAL DIRT AND STAIN REMOVAL, GENERAL CLEANING AND SPOT CLEANING OF SMALL AREAS
THAT ARE NOTICEABLY DIFFERENT, SO THAT THE SURFACE BLENDS SMOOTHLY INTO SURROUNDING AREAS.
G. LARGE-SCALE MOCK-UPS: PREPARE TWO (2) MOCKUPS OF CLEANING ON EXISTING SURFACES. THE PURPOSE OF THE MOCK-UPS IS TO
DEMONSTRATE AESTHETIC EFFECTS, SET QUALITY STANDARDS FOR MATERIALS AND EXECUTION, AND CONFIRM CONDITION OF
UNDERLYING MASONRY.
1. CLEAN AN AREA APPROXIMATELY 10 FT. WIDE AND 10 FT. HIGH FOR EACH MOCKUP, TO INCLUDE BRICK, STONE FOUNDATIONS,
AND STONE SILLS AND LINTELS. MOCKUPS WILL BE LOCATED WHERE IDENTIFIED BY THE ARCHITECT AND READILY ACCESSIBLE
FOR REVIEW BY THE ARCHITECT AND OWNER.
2. COORDINATE WITH ARCHITECT TO PROVIDE REVIEW OF COMPLETED LARGE-SCALE MOCKUPS.
3. APPROVAL OF MOCK-UPS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE APPROVAL OF DEVIATIONS FROM THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS CONTAINED IN
MOCK-UPS UNLESS ARCHITECT SPECIFICALLY APPROVES SUCH DEVIATIONS IN WRITING.
A. APPROVED MOCK-UPS MAY BECOME PART OF THE COMPLETED WORK IF UNDISTURBED AT TIME OF SUBSTANTIAL

B. WEATHER LIMITATIONS: PROCEED WITH INSTALLATION ONLY WHEN EXISTING AND FORECASTED WEATHER CONDITIONS PERMIT
REPAIR WORK TO BE PERFORMED ACCORDING TO PRODUCT MANUFACTURERS' WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS AND SPECIFIED
REQUIREMENTS AND WITHIN TEMPERATURE LIMITS AS DEFINED BELOW:

A. PROVIDE CONTAINMENT SYSTEM TO COLLECT ALL CHEMICAL AND WATER RUN-OFF AT EACH SCAFFOLD LEVEL. DO NOT ALLOW
CHEMICAL CLEANERS OR RINSE WATER TO RUN DOWN THE FACE OF THE BUILDING BELOW THE AREA BEING CLEANED.
1. LEGALLY DISPOSE OF ALL CHEMICALS AND WATER OFF-SITE.
B. CONTRACTOR SHALL MONITOR THE CONDITIONS INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING DURING THE APPLICATION OF WATER TO
ASSURE THAT CLEANING DOES NOT CAUSE WATER ENTRY TO THE INTERIOR AS WELL AS PROPER CONTROL OF RUNOFF WATER TO THE
EXTERIOR. IF UNDESIRABLE CONDITIONS OCCUR DURING CLEANING, WATER APPLICATION SHALL BE STOPPED UNTIL THE CONDITION
IS RESOLVED.
C. PROCEED WITH CLEANING IN AN ORDERLY MANNER; WORK FROM TOP TO BOTTOM OF EACH SCAFFOLD WIDTH AND FROM ONE END OF

3.05 FINAL CLEANING
