CITY OF AITKIN – STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER
The City of Aitkin is seeking a dedicated full-time Street Maintenance Worker. This position is
essential for the smooth operation of city functions and works closely with the Street Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
• Valid MN Class A driver’s license required. Tanker endorsement preferred.
• Inspect and maintain sewer system and lift stations.
• Maintain equipment and grounds/facilities.
Position Details:
• Type: Union Position
• Starting Wage: $21.60 – $24.55 per hour, DOE
• Wage Range: $21.60 – 29.32 per hour
• Seasonal Snow Shift Differential Pay
• Benefits: Excellent benefits and insurance package included. Family Health Insurance
paid by Employer.

Position Summary
Responsible for maintaining and repairing city infrastructure, buildings, equipment and parks in an efficient and safe
manner to provide the community with functional, safe and attractive roadways, infrastructure and recreational
opportunities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Water distribution, wastewater and storm water collection systems
• Performs daily inspections and maintenance, monitors lift stations, upgrades sewer lines, etc.
• Responds to emergency repairs such as sewer backups outside of normal working hours.
City Streets
• Maintains streets by performing street cleaning, minor street repairs, patching, crosswalk and curb painting,
crack sealing, etc.
• Clears right-of-way.
• Performs snow and ice removal and removal of storm debris.
• Repairs and maintains machinery and equipment.
• Maintains streetlights, poles and street signs.
• Maintains and repairs lots and sidewalks.
Buildings and Facilities
• Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, etc.: mows and trims, removes and plants trees and shrubs.
• Maintains parking lots.
• Performs building maintenance and repairs.
Parks and Recreation
• Mows, trims and maintains grounds.
• Repairs and maintains playground equipment.
• Collects and disposes of trash.
• Maintains and repairs skate park, hockey rink, walking trails, and foot bridge.
Vehicles and Equipment
• Performs routine service and maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Performs welding and fabricating.
• Repairs as necessary.
• Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
Other duties as apparent or assigned.
• Prepares reports and records of activities and projects.
• Assists in planning and providing for future city expansion.
• Performs public relations: notifies public of projects and maintenance and responds to questions and concerns.
• Assigns work, trains and instructs seasonal workers.
• Attends meetings, trainings and continuing education.

Qualifications
Education: High School graduation or equivalent.
Requirements:
• Valid MN Class A driver’s license with tanker endorsement.
• Ability to respond 24/7 to emergencies.
•
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to obtain Class SC wastewater collection system license.
• Heavy equipment operations certification.
• Knowledge of sanitary and storm sewer systems.
• Knowledge of street and sidewalk maintenance, repair, and preservation.
• Knowledge of building maintenance and repair.
• Knowledge and skill in equipment operation, repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of maintenance of parks, grounds, and vegetation.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
• Exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, heat and cold.
• Regularly working near moving mechanical equipment and often in precarious places, where the employee is
exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals with risk of electrical shock and vibration.
• When outside or on job sites, this position may be exposed to loud noises.
• The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or
controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100
pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral and depth vision.

• Hand and power tools, mowers, testing equipment, electrical equipment, snow and ice removal equipment, city
vehicles.
