Buckwalter Recreation Athletic Complex Expansion

This project involves the construction of four artificial turf soccer fields; a restroom building; renovations to the existing restroom building; parking areas; driveways and sidewalks; storm water management facilities; associated utilities; site and sports lighting; site furnishings; and planting and irrigation systems.

Project Objective: To construct a high quality, functional sports complex that is ready for use by The Beaufort County Parks and Recreation Department for the citizens of Beaufort County.

Buckwalter Recreation Center is located on 142.91 acres within the Buckwalter PUD, in Bluffton, SC. Of the 142.91 acres, 81.27 acres are upland property; 0.35 acres are freshwater isolated non-jurisdictional wetlands; and 61.25 acres are jurisdictional wetlands that are subject to regulatory jurisdiction. An existing on site Beaufort Jasper Sewer and Water Authority Lift Station accounts for 0.04 acres.

The property is currently owned by the Town of Bluffton, operated and maintained by Beaufort County, and is bordered on the west by Buckwalter Parkway; to the north and east by Hampton Hall; to the east by The Farm at Buckwalter and Barton's Run; and on the south by May River Road.

In 2022 a Master Plan Amendment was approved for the park property to include the proposed new work. On April 8, 2025, the Town of Bluffton approved the Development Plans as Application DP-10-23-018587. The project received approvals for MS4 and NPDES.
