Technical Requirements
Proposed systems shall meet or exceed the following minimum requirements. Final sizing
shall be based on the proposer’s calculations and site-verified conditions. City of Inde-
pendence is under the 2018 Uniform Plumbing Code.
Design Basis (Minimum)
Fixture load: one (1) water closet and one (1) lavatory (half bath).
Estimated wastewater profile: intermittent, low-volume domestic sewage.
Horizontal discharge distance: approximately 100 yards (≈300 linear feet) from
pump basin to connection point.
Static lift: uphill to municipal main (proposer shall field-verify vertical rise and in-
clude in TDH).
Pump Performance Requirements
Package grinder pump system rated for residential/light commercial pressure
sewer service.
Minimum motor: 1 HP (higher HP acceptable if required by calculated TDH).
Grinder pump shall be capable of handling raw domestic sewage and solids associ-
ated with a toilet and lavatory.
The grinder pump and controls shall be capable of delivering, at a minimum:
o 25 gpm at the calculated Total Dynamic Head (TDH); and
o 10 gpm at TDH + 10 ft (design margin) or as otherwise justified by the pro-
poser.
Proposer shall submit the following as part of the proposal:
o Pump curve clearly identifying the operating point;
o TDH calculation including static lift, friction losses, and minor losses;
o Assumed duty cycle and estimated run time per event.
Note: For installations of this nature, TDH commonly ranges between 4090 feet, depend-
ing on vertical rise and pipe diameter. Proposers shall field-verify all assumptions.
Force Main (Discharge Piping) Requirements
Provide a dedicated pressurized force main from the pump basin to the municipal
sewer main.
Nominal pipe size:
o Preferred minimum: 1.5-inch pressure-rated pipe;

“Delivering Excellence”
o 2-inch pipe acceptable if proposer demonstrates adequate scouring velocity
at operating flow rates.
Force main shall be designed to maintain a target velocity of 28 ft/s during pump
operation.
Acceptable materials include:
o HDPE pressure pipe (e.g., SDR11/DR11) with heat-fused joints; or
o PVC pressure pipe (e.g., C900/C905 as applicable) with restrained joints.
Provide bedding and backfill suitable for pressure piping and frost protection per lo-
cal practice.
Install continuous tracer wire and detectable marking tape along the full length of
all non-metallic force main piping.
Piping installed at a depth of 24” minimum.
Valves, Appurtenances, and Controls
The grinder pump system shall include the following minimum appurtenances:
Check valve installed on the discharge line to prevent backflow.
Isolation (shutoff) valve installed downstream of the check valve to allow mainte-
nance.
Quick disconnects and/or unions to allow removal of the grinder pump without ex-
cavation.
High-water alarm with local audible and visual indication.
Pump failure alarm (may be combined with high-water alarm).
Alarm devices shall be mounted in a readily visible and accessible location.
Optional remote/telemetry alarm systems may be proposed as an alternate.
Electrical Requirements
Provide a dedicated electrical circuit for the grinder pump system.
Electrical installation shall comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and all
applicable local requirements.
Provide a lockable disconnect means and weatherproof control panel/enclosure as
required.
All electrical work shall be performed by a licensed electrician.
Sewer Main Connection
Will be completed by the City of Independence, contractor responsible for exposing
the main and backfilling per City Standards.
