Summary
Project Introduction In 2024, Governor Dewine launched Phase 1 of Ohio’s Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) takeback and destruction program ( Ohio AFFF Takeback Program | Ohio Environmental Protection Agency ) .  AFFF is used to control dangerous chemical fires but contains highly concentrated Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) which can contaminate drinking water supplies.  Over three years ago, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency ( Ohio EPA) contracted with Battelle to develop a registration system, then collect and destroy over 13,000 gallons of AFFF from eligible fire departments.  Based on the voluntary registration of material by numerous fire departments, there remains tens of thousands of gallons of AFFF material needing collected and destroyed.  Ohio EPA has received a Dupont Chemical/Washington Works settlement and plans to utilize $13.6M towards Phase 2 efforts for AFFF collection and destruction.
