INTENT
It is the intent of these plans and specifications to provide for a general contractor who shall provide all labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary to perform in a professional manner for the ACADEMY STREET SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENT as described in the specifications and bid document.
SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of work for this project shall consist of
• Removal of Existing Sidewalk:
Demolition and removal of the current concrete sidewalk panels along both sides of Academy Street (specific limits to be defined in the field or per plan). This includes disposal of old materials in compliance with city and environmental regulations.
• Site Preparation:
Grading and compaction of the subgrade to ensure proper slope, drainage, and ADA-compliant cross slopes. Adjustments may be made to match adjacent property entrances, driveways, or curbs.
• Installation of New Sidewalk:
Construction of new concrete sidewalk panels at the same location, following City of Kalamazoo standard sidewalk specifications and ADA accessibility guidelines. New sidewalk will match existing conditions except at northeast corner of Academy and Church, where radius will be reduced (as shown in plans).
• Curb Ramps and Transitions
Reconstruction or modification of curb ramps at intersections and driveways to ensure full ADA compliance. Detectable warning surfaces will be installed where required.
• Traffic Control:
Temporary traffic and pedestrian control will be implemented throughout the duration of the project to ensure public safety and minimize disruption. All signage, barriers, and detours will follow MUTCD and city standards.
• Restoration:
Disturbed areas adjacent to the sidewalk will be restored with topsoil, seed, and mulch or other applicable treatments to match existing conditions.
All necessary traffic control, labor, materials, tools, equipment, and other items incidental to the work being performed shall be included in the Contractor’s unit price for this contract. Such items will not be bid or paid for separately but shall be included in the overall unit price.
The bidder shall furnish all labor, supervision, supplies, tools, equipment, and other means necessary or proper for performing and completing the work. The bidder shall be responsible for the cleaning up of the job site and shall repair or restore all structures and property that may be damaged or disturbed during performance of the work to the satisfaction of the Public Services Department for the City of Kalamazoo. Drainage structure covers shall be salvaged and reused if in usable condition; otherwise, they shall be replaced. Where needed, all traffic control used for such operations as defined by the MMUTCD will be the responsibility of the bidder.
The bidder shall have all work completed by November 1, 2025.
