NORTH CHARLESTON SEWER DISTRICT
REQUEST FOR STATEMENTS OF QUALIFICATIONS
NCSD CIP# 2643000-Engineering for Pipe Supports for
SGM-04718
PROJECT PURPOSE AND GOAL
The North Charleston Sewer District is seeking to retain a qualified engineering firm to provide a design
for the replacement of timber pipe support structures of an aerial sanitary sewer gravity main.
BACKGROUND
The District is a publicly owned utility created in 1972 by an act of the South Carolina State Legislature,
governed by a Board of Commissioners that provides retail and wholesale wastewater service to
approximately 34,000 customers in the City of North Charleston and nearby communities, with a service
area of approximately 60 square miles.
The gravity main (SGM-04718) is a 12-inch cast iron pipe (CIP), that was constructed in 1968. The
timber pipe support structures are in poor structural condition and in need of replacement.
SCOPE OF WORK
Currently, there are eight (8) support structures over "dry" land, and three (3) support structures over Filbin
Creek, supporting the 12-inch CIP. The span over Filbin Creek is approximately 20 feet in width. Existing pipe
pile supports consist of: 14"x14" timber bent caps four feet in length, with 8"x12" blocking, and two (2) 25-foot
10 T timber piles per support. This design proposal should account for the replacement of all aerial pipe
supports.
The final proposal should include design recommendations, a cost for the professional engineering services, and
an opinion of probable construction cost for the design.
