Project Background
With the completion of Science and Ag Hill Modernization, Phase II, the Environmental Health Sciences department will relocate to Cedar Street Building B allowing for full renovation of Building #1050. Built c. 1939 with New Deal funds, the building originally served the Dairy Sciences department and has housed Environmental Health Sciences since the 1970s. Classrooms will meet UGA¿s three criteria for Active Learning classrooms as defined in the institution¿s Quality Enhancement Plan by providing a minimum of 25 square feet per student, mobile furnishings and student collaboration tools.
Project Description
This project will entail a total renovation of Building #1050, encompassing approximately 24,000 GSF. The concrete and masonry building is composed of a central three-story form with a rear one-story wing. A small area will be excluded from the renovation: approximately 900 SF currently occupied by a food service vendor located in the former Creamery on the first floor of the building. The vendor is expected to stay operational for the duration of the project.
This historic building, having only received piecemealed improvements, is in need of cohesive updates. The last extensive renovation work in the building took place in 2001 and was limited to the rear wing. Code enhancements are needed to improve restrooms, replace the elevator, enhance accessibility, and add fire suppression. The existing MEP systems in the building are all experiencing age-related deficiencies and
