Cleaning and Conservation of USS Cleveland Bell

The City of Cleveland (City), Department of Public Safety, is seeking proposals from qualified conservation specialists for the cleaning and preservation of the historic bronze ship’s bell from the USS Cleveland. The bell is a historical artifact crafted from a solid cast copper alloy and features intricate relief imagery that represents a valuable component of naval pageantry and civic history. Currently mounted on a wooden frame, the bell displays evidence of extensive historical polishing, which has resulted in substantial wear and the accumulation of residues that obscure its detailed features. The City is committed to preserving this artifact's integrity through careful and professional conservation practices. The goal of this project is to safely clean and stabilize the bell, preventing further deterioration and ensuring its ongoing preservation for educational and historical appreciation. All conservation plans must receive prior approval from the Naval History and Heritage Command.
