Description:
For full scope of work with photos email hope@northcountryruraldevelopment.org
Project Summary
This project involves the replacement of the sewer lateral (upper and lower) from the home's basement(dirt) to the street. The sewer lateral is the pipe (Orangeburg) that connects the home’s plumbing system to the municipal sewer main, running from the basement of the house to the street. The replacement will ensure the system is free of leaks, blockages, and structural damage, ensuring compliance with local regulations and improving system reliability.
Project Preparation
Site Assessment
-
Inspect and assess the current condition of the existing sewer lateral from the home's basement to the street.
-
Identify potential issues (e.g., root intrusion, blockages, pipe deterioration).
-
Conduct a survey to locate the exact path of the sewer lateral, taking note of any obstacles or obstructions.
-
Verify utility locates to avoid damage to existing utilities such as water, gas, or electrical lines.
Permitting
-
Obtain all necessary permits from the local government for sewer lateral replacement.
-
Submit plans for approval to the local municipality or utility company if required.
-
Ensure compliance with local codes, regulations, and industry standards.
Safety and Environmental Considerations
-
Implement a safety plan for the construction crew, including the use of proper PPE and safety equipment.
-
Secure the area to ensure the safety of residents and workers.
-
Properly manage and dispose of any excavated material, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Demolition and Excavation
Excavation for Sewer Lateral Replacement
-
Mark the location of the existing sewer lateral from the home's basement to the street.
-
Excavate the trench to a sufficient depth to allow for the removal and replacement of the old sewer lateral. Ensure the trench is wide enough for equipment and proper pipe installation.
-
If the excavation involves any part of the street or sidewalk, secure traffic control measures, such as signage and barriers, to ensure public safety.
Removal of Existing Sewer Lateral
-
Disconnect the existing sewer lateral from both the home’s plumbing system (PVC) and the municipal sewer main.
-
Remove and dispose of the old pipe, ensuring proper disposal per local regulations.
Installation of New Sewer Lateral
New Pipe Selection
-
Select a replacement pipe that meets local codes and regulations (commonly PVC, HDPE, or cast iron).
-
Ensure the new pipe is durable and corrosion-resistant to minimize future maintenance needs.
New Sewer Lateral Installation
-
Install the new pipe from the home’s basement to the street, ensuring proper alignment and slope to prevent future blockages or backflow.
-
Use appropriate fittings and joints to connect the new pipe sections securely and safely.
-
Ensure that the new pipe is laid with the correct depth and slope to maintain proper flow toward the street.
-
Test the system for leaks before covering the pipe.
Connection to Existing Systems
-
Connect the new sewer lateral to the home’s plumbing system and to the municipal sewer main or existing sewer infrastructure at the street. (Application to Westport DPW attached)
-
Ensure proper sealing of connections to prevent infiltration or exfiltration of wastewater.
Backfilling and Restoration
Backfilling the Trench
-
Once the new pipe is in place and properly tested, backfill the trench with clean soil or fill material to avoid damage to the pipe.
-
Compact the backfill material in layers to avoid settling, ensuring the stability of the pipe.
Restoration of Site
-
Restore the area to its original condition, including replacing any disturbed pavement, sidewalk, or landscaping.
-
Ensure proper grading to allow for proper drainage away from the newly installed sewer lateral
Testing and Inspection
Final Inspection
-
Schedule a final inspection with local authorities to ensure that the installation complies with all applicable codes.
-
Provide necessary documentation, including inspection reports and test results.
Final Testing
-
Conduct a flow test to ensure the sewer lateral is functioning as expected and there are no blockages or leaks.
-
Perform a camera inspection to confirm the integrity of the new pipe installation.
Documentation
Record Keeping
-
Provide the homeowner with all relevant documentation, including warranty information for the new sewer lateral, permits, and inspection records.
Final Report
-
Submit a final report to the homeowner detailing the work completed, any challenges encountered, and assurances of the proper operation of the new sewer lateral.
