The Frank Porter Graham Student Union serves as an active hub for student activities including student orientation. The building currently houses a 20 kW photovoltaic array installed in 2016 comprised of 64 panels covering approximately 1,800 square feet. This project will replace the existing array with a new photovoltaic array sized as large as budgetary constraints allow. The roof at this building is being replaced under a separate project and the existing solar array will be removed by the roofing contractor and stored per UNC requirements. The replacement solar array will need to be installed on the new roof consisting of 28,000 available square feet. The new roofing material will be a modified bitumen system over a concrete deck roof.

This building is connected to the UNC owned Electric Distribution System (EDS) at 12.47 kV. In addition to meeting sustainable initiatives of the university, the new array, potential battery storage, EV Charging infrastructure and distribution equipment may also be used as a learning tool for students. The design build contractor shall provide turn key design and construction services including supporting UNC EDS with the completion of the interconnection application / agreement, evaluation of all existing systems and conditions including but not limited to detailed evaluation of existing structural and electrical systems by licensed professional engineers in the state of NC and implement necessary upgrades to support the installation of the new array.

The project delivery method will be Design-Build contract. The anticipated project budget is $440,000.00.
