Fire Department Physicals

The Palo Alto Fire Department is required to have annual examinations for the fire personnel. This program involves at least 7 visits onsite. Four visits are required to draw all the labs samples and complete the purified protein derivative (PPD) placement and 48-72 hours reading. Three of the examination days are 7am-5pm at Station 6 to complete all the testing and physical examination components of the examination.

Palo Alto Fire Department will require additional testing for all male personnel over 39 years of age receive a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). All personnel (the entire department) are offered a Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) testing. All HAZMAT personnel are required to perform a serum Cholinesterase.

Approximately 60 firefighters require physicals annually.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

1. Fire Department Physical Fitness Coordinator contacts CONSULTANT and provides available date sets to conduct blood tests (1 ^st date set) and physicals (2 ^nd date set) at Station #6. Date sets consist of one A, B, & C shift day. A roster is also provided.
2. On the 1st pre-determined date set, the CONSULTANT establishes an on-site clinic at Station #6 with appropriately certified personnel and equipment to conduct the blood test portion of the physical.
3. On the 2nd pre-determined date set, the CONSULTANT re-establishes the on-site clinic at Station #6 with appropriately certified personnel and equipment to conduct the rest of the physical. Different locations in the building are set up where each team member will conduct a portion of the physical as outlined in the CONSULTANT’s performance tasks.
4. Shift personnel are coordinated to rotate into the off-site clinic throughout the day on each shift date by the duty Battalion Chief. There are 6 Fire Stations and personnel located at Fire Administration in City Hall. This is repeated for at least 2 more days to accommodate the remaining shifts.
5. TB testing (mandated) and Hep B, Tetanus, MMR & Varicella vaccines/titer (mandated to offer) to be included.

SCHEDULING MANAGEMENT

CITY Project Manager controls the dates service will be provided and has the ability to schedule multiple physicals at one event. At an off-site location, individual appointments would need to be scheduled, and vendor determines dates and times of availability.

On-site physicals are performed while employees are on duty. To attend an off-site appointment, CITY personnel will schedule it on their off-duty day or if remaining on duty, have his vehicle taken out of service to attend or substitute another employee for the time he is at the appointment.
