Invitation

The Buffalo Trace Covered Wooden Bridge Authority (BTCWBA) is requesting sealed bids for restoration of the historical Dover Covered Bridge in Mason County, near the City of Dover, Kentucky. Severe storms, flash flooding and age has caused the wooden bridge to sustain structural damage requiring rehabilitation of the bridge. Scope of Work

BTCWBA will enter into an agreement with a contractor, licensed in the state of Kentucky. The contractor must have specific experience in the knowledge and workings of wooden covered bridges and follow the standards of the Secretary of the Interior for Rehabilitation and Restoration of Covered Bridges. Contractors shall submit a proposal including but not limited to documentation regarding their experience/credentials, and a detailed plan outlining how all construction phases will be completed including a project schedule. Work will be awarded based on lump sum low bid. Submitted Bid to include cost breakdown for each Phase. Bridge shall still be considered historic at the completion of the rehab per the minimum standards and requirements set by the Burlington Charter for the Preservation of Historic Covered Bridges.

Phase 1

Dismantle bridge as necessary

Add additional support

Raise bridge off abutments and correct chamber

Construct a support platform under the bridge

Phase 2

Dismantle lower cords, inspect, repair or replace as necessary

Inspect and repair end bracing

Repair top cord and roof framing as needed

Install new metal roof

Install floor beams and floor plank as needed

Reinstall/replace siding trim and portals as needed

Phase 3

Approach wing walls to be reworked and repaired

Approaches to be graded and paved to divert water as needed

Guard rails repaired /replaced as needed

Contractor shall remove all waste and materials not reused in bridge rehab; including but not limited to unused steel beams onsite

All original timbers and components of Dover Covered Bridge are to be reused where possible.

Documents to be submitted by the selected Contractor at the conclusion of the Project

  • As built Drawings.
  • Documentation ensuring that restoration work completed meets the minimum standards set by the Burlington Charter for the Preservation of Historic Covered Bridges and the Secretary of the Interior for Rehabilitation and Restoration of Covered Bridges. This shall include documentation stating that the bridge is still considered historic by the Burlington Charter for the Preservation of Historic Covered Bridges at the completion of the rehab.
  • Bridge Load Rating containing the Maximum Pedestrian Loading. The Load Rating shall be prepared and stamped by a Professional Engineer, licensed in the state of Kentucky.
  • Material Specs for all materials used.

Reserve Clause

BTCWBA reserves the right to reject any and all bids that do not meet the required specifications. Businesses performing work for BTCWBA shall comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
