Description

PHSA ITQ 13055 Decedents Storage and Transport Services. The submission location is https://phsa.bonfirehub.ca/opportunities/88127&nbsp ; Caring for the deceased is an essential component of healthcare and should be prioritized with the same level of attention and respect as care for the living. Interior Health is committed to delivering high-quality services that honor the dignity of individuals and families, while maintaining robust, compassionate, and efficient processes in the management of deceased patients. This commitment extends to fostering a culture of empathy, compassion, and trust.
Interior Health operates 26 facilities with mortuary capacity. The capacity at each site is influenced by four primary factors:
  • The number of physical refrigerated crypts available
  • Access and flow of deceased patients
  • Funeral home and/or family arrangements
  • Cultural and religious traditions
Each facility's baseline capacity is shared across its community, with utilization distributed among Acute, Long-Term, and Community Care Services, as well as deaths occurring outside the healthcare system and those under investigation by the BC Coroner’s Service.
As the population increases, the demand for morgue space is anticipated to rise accordingly. To address these growing needs and acknowledge the fixed capacity at current sites, the system must proactively plan for the availability of morgue facilities and related services. This will ensure the ability to meet the rising demand while upholding dignity and adhering to health regulations.
To ensure we are prepared for potential increases in demand, it is critical for Interior Health to secure additional mortuary support, including transport and storage services. This proactive approach will safeguard compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, protect the operational integrity of the healthcare system, support the well-being of our staff, and uphold the dignity and safety of deceased patients.
Services must be capable of providing:
  • 300 decedent days
  • Minimum storage of 15 decedents at a time
  • Capable of providing interfacility transfers including bariatric decedents
  • Capable of providing service within the four designated zones (Okanagan Zone, Thompson/Cariboo/Shuswap Zone, East Kootenay Zone, Kootenay Boundary Zone)
