  • Summary:Arlington County's Department of Human Services, Public Health Division, is required by Virginia (VA) State Code to diagnose and treat Tuberculosis (TB) to protect the community from this airborne disease.

Arlington County's rate of active TB is twice that of Virginia's rate. 90% of TB in Northern VA region is among those born outside of the US and coming from countries where TB is widespread.

TB testing, especially among those born outside of the US, is ideally performed by a blood test. Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) testing reduces the risk of false positives among individuals who have had Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine in their country of origin. False positive tests are seen frequently when using TB skin tests in this population and result in unnecessary chest x-rays, and treatment. The use of IGRA for TB testing is in keeping with the standards of care set by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

The T-Spot® test is the preferred test and used most widely by the Public Health Division. It requires one (1) tube of blood from individual.
Arlington County currently uses the IGRA T-Spot® and the QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus as a backup to T-Spot®. Testing supplies are provided by the laboratory facility to collect the specimens.
