Overview

Summary

The City of Kyle is located approximately 23 miles south of the Austin along the I-35 corridor and roughly occupies 33 square miles of land with another 48 square miles of ETJ. Kyle’s population is rapidly growing and is estimated to be around 70,000 at the end of 2025.

The City of Kyle operates a public water system with a firm 5.82 MGD and serves ~21,000 connections in both city limits and ETJ. Kyle operates 5 wells and utilizes purchased water from Canyon Lake through GBRA and purchased water from the Carrizo Wilcox aquifer through ARWA. City of Kyle is considering multiple future projects that will increase the firm water supply over the next decade.

The City also operates a wastewater treatment plant that is currently permitted to treat 4.5 MGD and can expand up to 12MGD. As the plant increases in capacity effluent parameters become more stringent and phosphorus reduction is required. Effluent is discharged into the Bunton branch of Plum Creek.

As a leader in sustainability practices, City of Kyle is seeking to implement an IPR/DPR(indirect potable reuse/direct potable reuse) project to enhance water sustainability by treating and reusing effluent from its WWTP as potable water and transporting the same to City of Kyle’s PWS for distribution. Currently Kyle utilizes type II reclaimed water for use at the Plum Creek Golf Course. Tertiary treatment is planned at the WWTP to increase effluent water quality to type I reuse and the city plans to expand its non-potable reuse system.
