Clinical Documentation Improvement, Computer Aided Coding, and Autonomous Coding Software

Roswell Park Cancer Institute Corporation d/b/a Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is in the process of evaluating options for Computer Aided Coding and Autonomous Coding that will work alongside/supplement our 3M HDM Encoding Software. Roswell Park remains committed to billing all services from the clinical documentation to ensure compliance and comprehensiveness, however that model has become more and more difficult to achieve given the national shortage of qualified medical coders. It should be noted that Roswell Park is one of ten Cancer Centers in the United States that is exempt from the IPPS (DRG) reimbursement system. In that regard, our goals for inpatient are the capture of comorbid conditions and the demonstration of acuity to be used with our Payer Partners and other “public report card” outlets such as USNWR. The primary goals we have set forth for this project include:

Installation of Software that will facilitate and enable the appropriate and full capture of the acuity of our inpatients. This would include not only diagnostic CC and MCC capture, but also the appropriate identification and capture of more advanced mortality indices like Elixhauser Variables.

• Installation of Software that will facilitate and enhance the reporting and tracking of our CDI program’s performance as well as facilitate/enable provider queries to be performed on one platform in a traceable and reportable format.
• Implementation of Computer Aided and Autonomous coding where appropriate. Although we have and fully utilize our 157 Bed facility, Roswell Park has a much larger outpatient population. In addition, we have several clinical service areas such as Diagnostic Radiology, Outpatient Clinics, Anesthesia, Radiation Therapy, and Pathology that have repetitive, high-volume coding, all of which is performed manually currently.
• Any other offerings that the vendor may offer that will help us achieve our revenue, compliance, and Clinical Documentation Improvement goals.
